Manchester United and Liverpool are set to hold talks with Mateo Kovacic’s agent as the 28-year-old Chelsea star might depart the club.

According to 90 Min, Mateo Kovacic could leave Chelsea in the summer if discussions over an extension fall through. Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in the 28-year-old Croatian international and are set to open talks with his representatives.

Mateo Kovacic’s representatives are already in England to hold showdown talks with the Chelsea hierarchy. The 28-year-old midfielder is among a host of stars entering the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge, with suggestions that he could depart if they cannot find a breakthrough in negotiations.

Chelsea are willing to discuss a contract extension but may also open their doors to an exit. The Blues hierarchy have adopted a different policy than their predecessors, showing they are not open to paying huge salaries and obliging to player demands.

Mason Mount’s situation may provide an example, as the England international could leave the club in the off-season despite being an important player. Similarly, Kovacic has found himself on similar grounds, with his agents set to finalise his future.

In any case, Chelsea are already planning to revamp their midfield ahead of the summer. Southampton’s Romeo Lavia remains a target, while they also have eyeballs on Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone as a potential signing.

There’s little clarity on what Kovacic wants, but if his representatives are talking with Chelsea, one must assume he remains open to staying here. However, clubs like Manchester City have already held discussions to figure out a way to sign him.

Manchester United and Liverpool are joining them, with both Premier League giants keen on Kovacic. The 28-year-old Chelsea star has considerable experience playing in Serie A, La Liga and the last five years in England. He has four Champions League medals, among other honours.

The experience of playing in the Premier League has enticed Liverpool to show an interest. Jurgen Klopp wants to refresh his midfield options in the summer and may have a considerable budget to strengthen with the right players. Kovacic certainly could fit the bill for the German coach, and hence, they could open discussions with his representatives.

Similarly, Manchester United are keen to bolster their midfield option, and Ten Hag’s recent preferences have shown he needs someone with considerable experience. Kovacic’s profile makes him the ideal partner for Casemiro at the heart of the Red Devils’ setup, and hence they could open the doors over a transfer.

For now, Kovacic’s representatives will consider what Chelsea have in store but will look to alternatives, including a move to one of their rivals. Liverpool or Manchester City will provide the platform for the 28-year-old to further his career in England.
