Dani Olmo, a long-term target for Barcelona, is reportedly keen on joining Real Madrid when he leaves RB Leipzig.

According to Spanish journalist Sergio Santos, Barcelona will have an uphill task chasing Dani Olmo. The Spanish international, whose market value is €40 million, wants to return to Spain. But his preferred destination is Real Madrid instead of Barcelona.

Dani Olmo has become a respectable playmaker on his own right after leaving La Masia before turning professional. The 24-year-old was brave enough to forego his eventual first-team debut for Barcelona to secure a quicker pathway to first-team football. And he rose to prominence during his stint with Dinamo Zagreb.

Olmo’s stock has continued to skyrocket since joining RB Leipzig in January 2020. The Spaniard has four goals and six assists in 23 appearances thus far this season. But his contract expires in less than 18 months. And such a situation has captured the attention of several clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Barcelona attempted to re-sign Olmo in the last two summer transfer windows. But a move did not materialise on either occasion, with the Blaugrana not having enough cash. However, the Spanish international continues to be on Barcelona’s radar. And recent reports have claimed that the Catalan giants want to land the player as soon as possible.

The interest in the 24-year-old is understandable, considering Ferran Torres faces an uncertain future at Spotify Camp Nou. But while Barcelona will look to secure Olmo’s signature, he prefers a move to Real Madrid. And the latest development comes as a boost for Los Blancos.

At Real Madrid, Marco Asensio and Eden Hazard face uncertain futures. While Hazard has failed to make his mark at Real Madrid, Asensio is in the final months of his contract. So the Merengues need to fill a vacant wide-attacking berth. And that has brought Olmo into the equation. Meanwhile, the reigning La Liga champions are also well-placed to match his market value, worth €40 million.

On the other hand, Barcelona will unlikely be in a position to pay anywhere near €40 million. So the Merengues hold the aces in the race to sign Olmo in the summer transfer window. And it will be interesting to see if the Spaniard returns to his homeland by joining Real Madrid.
