Manchester United could eye a Bosman move for Houssem Aouar as Erik ten Hag seeks a new midfielder for his squad.

According to Silvia Verde via El Chiringuito, Manchester United have set sights on a move for Houssem Aouar. The Red Devils have opened talks with the 24-year-old Frenchman, who will become a free agent with his contract with Lyon expiring in the summer.

Houssem Aouar captured the imagination of many top clubs a few years ago with his glowing performances for Lyon. In recent seasons. However, his stock has fallen considerably, with no big club going anywhere near signing him.

Arsenal famously courted the midfielder for a considerable period, but the Gunners have since looked away. They did come close to signing him in the summer of 2020 but chose to bring Thomas Partey as Lyon’s asking price proved too much.

While Partey’s arrival proved key to Arsenal’s success, Aouar has endured a difficult few years in France. He was linked with a move away in the last two windows, with Real Betis, one of the clubs keen to sign him. The Spanish side may have decided to wait for the 24-year-old Frenchman’s contract to expire and grab him on a free transfer.

They may have to battle it out with Manchester United now, as Erik ten Hag identified the 24-year-old Frenchman as a reliable option. The Red Devils have reportedly opened talks with Aouar and his camp over a potential Bosman deal.

Manchester United considered a move in January but chose not to invest by paying a transfer fee for a player available for free in six months. Similarly, Aston Villa were also linked in the last window, but Unai Emery thought about not signing one of the players he liked while at Arsenal.

Manchester United seek a new midfielder in the summer window. Ten Hag wants a player who could play centrally and contribute ably to his attacking side. Aouar, in the past, has proved his worth by scoring goals and providing assists.

His form with Lyon regressed as the environment may not have been conducive to growth. He might rekindle his old form in a new atmosphere, and Old Trafford could offer that. Manchester United will see long-term value in making the signing, particularly when he won’t cost them a dime.

The Red Devils will face competition from a few clubs for the 24-year-old Frenchman. The final decision will remain with Aouar as he ponders the next steps in his career. Regular playing time will be his primary objective before choosing his new club. But whether he gets that at Manchester United remains the question.
