Liverpool are closing in on signing Mason Mount, who has received a £180,000-a-week contract extension offer from Chelsea.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are edging close to signing Mason Mount from Chelsea in the summer. The 24-year-old’s contract situation at the Blues has been the talk of the town for a while. And the Merseyside club could end up signing him ahead of next season.

Mount has been a part of Chelsea since 2005. The England international has gone up the ranks at the club since joining their youth academy back in the day. The 24-year-old was subject to multiple loan moves to gain first-team experience.

After a successful loan stint with Derby County back in 2018/19, he was promoted to their first team and has not looked back since. He has featured in 192 matches for the Blues and has 70 goal contributions to his name.

As far as the ongoing season is concerned, Mount has featured in 32 matches and has nine goal involvements. Despite all the talk around his contract, he is still a key part of their squad. Mount’s ongoing contract runs out in the summer of 2024.

The Blues have tried to tie down the midfielder to a new contract, but they have failed to get the job done. Chelsea recently offered him a deal worth £180,000 per week. However, the player has rejected it as he wants pay parity with the highest-paid players in his team.

As per the recent reports, he wants to be paid the same as £250,000-a-week teammate Reece James. But, Chelsea are not willing to spend that much on renewing his contract. As a result, they could look to sell him at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have received a boost in their pursuit of the 24-year-old. They have been monitoring Mount for a few months now. And, the England international rejecting Chelsea’s contract extension offer could surely work in their favour.

The Merseyside club have struggled in the ongoing season because of an inconsistent midfield. Jurgen Klopp is keen on a midfielder overhaul and would love to have Mount in his ranks. The Chelsea midfielder is a big fan of the German boss and would love to work under him.

Liverpool are expected to bid for Mount in the summer. While Chelsea might look to sell him in a few months’ time, it will be interesting to see whether they let their youth product join their rivals.
