Liverpool could make a summer approach for Mason Mount if Chelsea fails to convince the England international to sign a new deal.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea are running a considerable risk with the Mason Mount situation as they are yet to agree on a new deal. Liverpool continues to admire the midfielder, and they could make a concrete summer approach to land the Blues star.

Mason Mount is a symbolic presence in this Chelsea side alongside Reece James. The duo have come through the Cobham academy and have flourished in the first team since making their debuts. They are highly valued individuals within Stamford Bridge’s corridors, but things could change for Mount.

Having signed James to a new long-term contract, Chelsea hope to do the same with Mount. The England international was previously stalling on a new contract with the club, citing multiple factors. The Blues were confident about keeping the player, and that remains the case.

Then in December, reports emerged that Mount was open to signing the new deal. The latest suggestions point towards fresh uncertainties between the two parties. The UCL winner reportedly wants to feel valued by the club, who have made some exciting signings in the last six months.

Mount currently earns £75,000 per week, and his contract ends in 18 months. The UCL winner may want Chelsea to pay him significantly with the new agreement, although how far the Blues are ready to go remains a question. They might be generous with their proposal, but time is of the essence for the Londoners.

If the saga drags until the summer, Chelsea will come under pressure for Mount. He has considerable interest coming from English clubs and those from abroad. For the Blues, the primary concern will come from Liverpool, who continue to monitor Mount’s situation.

Jurgen Klopp will enter the summer market looking for a top-class attacking midfielder, and Mount is on top of the list. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita from the current squad could depart on free transfers when the season ends. The Reds will need reinforcements.

Mount could prove perfect for their attacking system, but he might prefer to stay at Stamford Bridge. Much will depend on the offer Chelsea makes in the coming time, which they hope will convince Mount to remain at the club for the long term future.
