Kalvin Phillips is reportedly linked with a summer move away from Manchester City, with Newcastle United interested.

Kalvin Phillips completed a £42 million move to Manchester City at the start of the season. But things have not gone according to plan for him. He has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot and has not been able to impress with his performances either. A report from 90min claims that Newcastle United are now looking to sign him.

Apparently, Phillips is open to leaving Manchester City at the end of the season. And it will be interesting to see if Newcastle United can agree on a deal with the defending champions. Other English clubs have been keeping tabs on him as well.

Newcastle United have had to rely on players like Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff this season. While Shelvey has left the club, Longstaff is simply not good enough for a club hoping to challenge for the major trophies in the coming seasons.

Eddie Howe will have to find a top-quality partner for Bruno Guimaraes. And Phillips could prove to be an excellent addition. Interestingly, the Brazilian midfielder has emerged as a target for Manchester City.

Manchester United have earmarked Kalvin Phillips as an alternative to Declan Rice but will the Yorkshire Pirlo snap allegiances with Leeds United to join a hated rival?

As for Kalvin Phillips, the 27-year-old defensive midfielder has proven his quality in the Premier League with Leeds United. And he has been a success with the England national team as well. He can be an important player for Newcastle United if he manages to get over his fitness issues.

His arrival will help protect the central defenders and allow the creative players to operate with more freedom as well. Newcastle must look to invest in a top-quality defensive midfielder and Phillips seems like the ideal acquisition for the Magpies.

Newcastle are well-placed to secure Champions League qualification and could be an attractive destination for the England star at the end of the season. Phillips is at the peak of his career and he cannot afford to sit on the bench at Manchester City every week. He needs to play regularly and Newcastle could provide him with that platform.

As for Manchester City, they should look to cut their losses on the player and invest in someone who can perform at a high level consistently. It will be interesting to see if the £42 million signing departs from the Etihad in the coming months.
