Journalist Dean Jones insists Romeo Lavia could pick Manchester United over Chelsea as the Southampton midfielder could move in the summer.

Dean Jones via Give Me Sport reckons Romeo Lavia could prefer to play under Erik ten Hag than Graham Potter. Manchester United are reportedly interested in the 19-year-old Chelsea target, who could leave Southampton to play for a bigger club in the summer.

Romeo Lavia remains high on the shortlists of many top Premier League sides. The 19-year-old Chelsea target has impressed this season with Southampton, making 22 appearances. Some top-six sides consider his talent superior and want him in their squads.

Chelsea have wanted him since the summer and have remained in touch with the midfielder’s entourage over a move. Todd Boehly wants to add more firepower to their midfield following the acquisition of Enzo Fernandez. A player like Lavia could help the Argentine push a bit forward and make the Blues more formidable in the positions.

Manchester United are also keen on Lavia but faces plenty of competition for the 19-year-old. The Belgian could depart the Saints if they go down at the end of the season, as he has a promising career ahead. Journalist Dean Jones claimed the midfielder would rather play for Ten Hag than Potter.

Jones said, “I’m sure he’d rather play under Ten Hag than under Graham Potter. The way Ten Hag, this season, has been able to improve individuals on the whole has been really impressive.”

“There have been some players in that side that were really underperforming and he’s managing to get levels out of them again. There’s still a long way to go for him — no doubt about it — but he is rebuilding that Man United team.”

While Manchester United would prove a good destination for Lavia, Chelsea are not Ten Hag’s biggest problem in the chase. In fact, local rivals Manchester City are the threat in the chase for the Red Devils, as they have a £40 million buy-back clause in his contract.

And Manchester City are interested in re-signing the midfielder from Southampton in the summer. It would come as a big blow for Manchester United in their hopes to sign Lavia, with Pep Guardiola’s side having the first refusal on the Belgian if the Saints decide to sell.

If Man City decide against pursuing Lavia, then Manchester United have a chance, but Guiardiola’s side could intervene and prevent strengthening their rivals. As things stand, a transfer battle may brew in the summer for the 19-year-old Chelsea target, with the midfielder set for a promising career in the Premier League.
