Mohammed Salisu is attracting interest from top-four hopefuls Tottenham and Newcastle United as his Southampton future remains unclear.

Football Insider says Tottenham and Newcastle United are vying for Mohammed Salisu in the summer. The 23-year-old Ghanaian defender has entered a pivotal phase in his Southampton career, as a move to a bigger Premier League club beckons for the centre-back.

The Premier League season is entering its final phase, and things could ramp up with the relegation, title and top-four race. The clubs at the top end of the table will surely look at some players possibly getting the drop in May.

Southampton are one of the current favourites to go down after the season. But recent results have give the Saints optimism. Their recent victories over Chelsea and Leicester City have brightened the mood at the south coast club. But there is plenty of work ahead.

A few players in their squad are already primed to take the next steps to one of the bigger Premier League sides. Romeo Lavia and Mohammed Salisu are a few of those, with a particular interest in the duo from the top-six sides.

Tottenham and Newcastle United could move for Salisu, with those teams needing a new central defender. The Magpies, in particular, want a new centre-back to help shore up the backline. Eddie Howe ideally wants a partner for Sven Botman and is already considering several options.

Lille’s Tiago Djalo is a target for Howe, although he could also look at Salisu if Newcastle United can get a favourable deal. The 23-year-old Ghanaian defender will enter the final year of his deal in the summer. And if Southampton get relegated from the Premier League, the defender could become available on the cheap.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also keen on a new central defender, with names like Alessandro Bastoni on their shortlist. While a deal for the Italian may not materialise, considering many other top clubs will enter the market for him based on his availability, a Premier League-proven star may attract their attention.

Salisu is just that, as Spurs will open up space in their squad for a centre-back or two. Clement Lenglet could depart at the end of the season, alongside Japhet aTanganga and Davinson Sanchez. Tottenham will need a couple of centre-backs to shore up their backline.

They have suffered without quality depth and currently languish in the fourth spot, although Newcastle and Liverpool are inching closer to ousting them. As for Salisu, he has a bright future ahead of him and maybe leaving Southampton will come as the best possible decision for the young centre-back.
