AC Milan will reportedly look to sign Samuel Umtiti in the summer transfer window if he leaves Barcelona as a free agent.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercatoweb, Samuel Umtiti is the subject of interest from AC Milan. The Serie A champions are in the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window. And the Rossoneri will launch the offensive for the Frenchman if he leaves Barcelona as a free agent.

Samuel Umtiti was once among the best defenders in the World and was a pivotal figure for France when they won the 2018 FIFA World Cup. But the Frenchman embarked on a downward spiral following the triumphant moment four and a half years ago. And he became a peripheral figure for Barcelona in the last few seasons.

The 29-year-old reached rock bottom last summer before Barcelona loaned him out to Lecce. And the World Cup winner has gradually become a regular for the Italian club, making 12 appearances. Umtiti’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with AC Milan considering signing him in the summer.

But the Serie A champions are not ready to invest any amount to secure the player’s services later this year. Instead, AC Milan will wait to see if Barcelona will release him from his contract. And the Rossoneri will look to sign the French defender on a free transfer if he becomes a free agent in the coming months.

Umtiti is not the only Barcelona player to emerge on AC Milan’s radar. The Serie A heavyweights are also monitoring Ilias Akhomach’s situation. As for the interest in the 29-year-old, Simon Kjaer is well into his thirties. In addition, Fikayo Tomori’s future is up in the air amid interest from top clubs.

The English international recently emerged on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur. And Tomori’s departure will prompt AC Milan to sign a replacement. Umtiti might not be at the peak of his powers but has settled down in Italy. And the Barcelona loanee might be open to embarking on a new adventure by ending his stint at Spotify Camp Nou.

It will be interesting to see if the Catalan giants release the Frenchman from his contract. At the same time, AC Milan will be closely monitoring Umtiti’s situation. For now, the Frenchman will continue to resurrect his career while representing Lecce.
