Newcastle United will reportedly compete with Real Madrid for soon-to-be-free agent Alejandro Grimaldo this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, Alejandro Grimaldo is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign the Spanish defender. And the Benfica full-back is likely to join his next club in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

Alejandro Grimaldo spent his formative years in Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia. But he could never establish a foothold at Camp Nou and left Barcelona seven years ago. The 27-year-old joined Benfica and has not looked back since, going from strength to strength at the Portuguese club.

The Spanish defender has been top-class for Benfica this season, chipping in with five goals and eight assists in 38 appearances. But the Portuguese outfit will lose the player in the summer, as he will likely depart as a free agent. And Grimaldo’s situation has captured the attention of Newcastle United and Real Madrid.

At Newcastle United, Eddie Howe has several left-backs at his disposal. But Paul Dummett and Jamal Lewis are out of favour, while Matt Targett is a backup option. Dan Burn remains the first-choice left-back for Newcastle United. And the Magpies are ready to reward the 30-year-old with a new contract.

But with Burn on the wrong side of 30, Newcastle United can do with a long-term left-back solution. Several candidates, including Kieran Tierney, have thus emerged on their radar. And Grimaldo is also a viable target. But the soon-to-be-free Spanish defender also features on the wishlist of Real Madrid.

At Real Madrid, Ferland Mendy faces an uncertain future amid his inconsistent displays in the past year. And the reigning La Liga champions are considering investing in a top-class left-back in the summer. But while widespread reports have suggested Fran Garcia is one of their top targets. But Grimaldo is also an option worth considering for Real Madrid.

Apart from Newcastle United and Real Madrid, the Spanish defender is also a target for other clubs, including Barcelona, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Leeds United. And the soon-to-be-free Benfica full-back will likely compete a Bosman move somewhere in the coming months.
