La Liga heavyweights Barcelona will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old Spanish full-back Alejandro Grimaldo in a Bosman move.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Alejandro Grimaldo is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are considering signing the 27-year-old Benfica full-back in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

Alejandro Grimaldo has found a stable footing since leaving Barcelona seven years ago. The Spanish defender has been with Benfica since then and has established himself as a pivotal figure for the Portuguese giants. But he has never managed to break into the Spanish national squad.

The 27-year-old is enjoying a solid 2022/23 season, chipping in with five goals and eight assists in 37 appearances thus far. But Grimaldo’s contract situation has left Benfica in a spot of bother. And with the player closing in on leaving as a free agent, his situation has captured the attention of FC Barcelona.

Barcelona might enter the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window. While Xavi Hernandez currently has three left-backs at his disposal, Jordi Alba might leave in the summer. Recent reports have suggested Barcelona might terminate the veteran defender’s contract at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Marcos Alonso, who recently signed a new contract, is on the wrong side of 30. So it behoves Barcelona to scour the market for a long-term competitor for Alejandro Balde. And Balde’s namesake has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old’s potential free-agent status also makes him an attractive target for the Blaugrana. With the Catalan giants still struggling with financial issues, they cannot afford to shell out large amounts on new signings. And signing players like Grimaldo in a Bosman move might bode well for Barcelona.

The 27-year-old Spanish full-back is vastly experienced and has fared well in Europe. So signing someone like him for free in the summer will be akin to Barcelona winning the lottery. But it will be interesting to see if Grimaldo’s potential free-agent status captures the attention of a few other high-profile clubs across Europe.
