Barcelona will challenge Liverpool for the signature of Chelsea star Mason Mount

According to Calciomercato, Spanish giants Barcelona have joined Liverpool in the pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount ahead of the summer transfer window.

The English international came through the ranks at Cobham before making a name for himself while on loan at Derby County. Frank Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge as manager was the turning point in Mount’s career, seeing him develop into a first-team player for the Blues.

He also thrived under Lampard’s successor, Thomas Tuchel but is now struggling to impress under Graham Potter. The 24-year-old is an energetic midfielder in the middle of the park and has so far made 190 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 33 goals and assisting 37 more.

The Todd Boehly era at Chelsea has seen a mass upheaval of the playing squad, with several big-money signings arriving at Stamford Bridge. It is not all unicorns and rainbows as the likes of Mount have struggled for game time and form. The midfielder is not close to penning a new contract and this has attracted attention to his services from several other clubs.

Liverpool’s need for midfielders is common knowledge. Signing Mount will not just give them an energetic presence in the middle of the park, but also add to their home-grown players’ quota. Given how Jurgen Klopp has got the likes of Jordan Henderson and Stefan Bajcetic playing, there is reason to believe the German can resurrect Mount’s career.

The Reds’ pursuit of Mount will not be easy, with Barcelona also now joining the fray. The Blaugrana have a potent trio of Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong at the club but lack a forceful presence who can burst into the opposition box. Mount can do just that and would be an excellent upgrade over Franck Kessie, who could be on his way out.

Sergio Busquets is not getting any younger, while De Jong could also leave amidst interest from Manchester United. Mount has the best years of his career ahead of him and can have the club of his choice to continue his career yet. Whether it be Liverpool Barcelona, Chelsea or even elsewhere, a change of scenery will do the 24-year-old a world of good.
