Chelsea have entered the race to secure the signature of Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo, who is on loan at Bayern Munich.

According to a report by 90min, Chelsea are interested in signing Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo in the summer. The Manchester City full-back recently joined Bayern Munich on a six-month loan with a €70 million option to buy. But, the German giants are not willing to pay that big an amount to secure his services.

After falling out of favour with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Cancelo asked to leave the club. He decided to join Bayern in the winter on a six-month loan. But, the Bavarian giants are not interested in triggering the €70 million purchase option. As a result, a lot of clubs across Europe are keeping an eye on the Portuguese international.

Joao Cancelo joined Manchester City back in the summer of 2019 from Juventus. Ever since his arrival at the club, he has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plan. And, in the past few seasons, his performances at left-back were absolutely sensational.

He has featured in over 150 matches for Manchester City. The 28-year-old has 31 goal contributions for City, 22 of which are assists. In the ongoing season, he has made 29 appearances and has nine goal contributions.

While it might not have been that great a season for Cancelo, he still is one of the best full-backs in the modern age. Chelsea are interested in signing him in the summer of 2023. Graham Potter would love to have Cancelo in his ranks. The Portuguese defender can play as a right-back, a left-back, or even as a midfielder if needed. He will give Potter multiple options, and his attacking threat will add more firepower to the team.

Marc Cucurella, who joined the Blues in the summer, has not been able to put in convincing performances. In addition, the future of Ben Chilwell is in doubt amid interest from Manchester City. Chelsea might be willing to listen to offers for Chilwell. And with Cancelo available in the summer, they are likely to push for him.

While Bayern Munich are not willing to pay €70 million to secure the defender, they are trying to negotiate at a lower rate. Even Real Madrid are interested in his services. As a result, it will be interesting to see who ends up signing the 28-year-old Portuguese full-back in the summer.
