Manchester United and Chelsea refuse to be discouraged by Napoli’s asking price for Victor Osimhen
According to Sport Witness, Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea remain unfazed by Napoli’s asking price for star striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the 2023 summer transfer window.
The Nigerian international is spearheading Napoli’s first Serie A title since the Diego Maradona era. With 15 goals and four assists in 20 appearances across all competitions, the 24-year-old leads the club’s scoring charts and averages close to a goal contribution a game.
Good in the air and lethal within the box, Osimhen has all the makings of a dominant centre forward. He has adjusted well to life in Italy and has shown that he can be relied upon as an infallible goalscorer.
This has attracted attention from the Premier League with both Man United and Chelsea in need of strikers. Erik ten Hag’s rebuild at Old Trafford is going well but the Dutchman lacks a focal point in the attack.
While Wout Weghorst’s arrival on loan does provide a temporary solution, the Duh striker is far from the infallible goalscorer the club needs. Cristiano Ronaldo’s unceremonious exit followed by Anthony Martial’s struggles with injuries makes it inevitable that the Red Devils make a move for reinforcements next summer.
The situation is more or less the same at Chelsea, who failed to replace Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner. Armando Broja’s injury coupled with Piere-Emerick Aubameyang’s fall from grace has more or less piled pressure on Kai Havertz to lead the line. The Blues have already agreed to bring in Christopher Nkunku next summer but can do with yet more reinforcements.
Napoli have placed an asking price of €120m on the Nigerian international. This is unlikely to deter both the English sides next summer. Should the Italians play their cards right, there is every reason to believe they can provoke a bidding war.
Chelse have shown so far that money is not an issue for them under Todd Boehly. One would assume that the Blues thus hold an edge over Man United in this transfer race. Whether the Glazers or new owners are willing to match their Premier League rivals pound to pound remains to be seen.
