Chelsea are reportedly set to push for the signature of 27-year-old Brentford goalkeeper David Raya in the summer of 2023.

The winter window has just closed, and Chelsea are already planning their moves for the summer of 2023. According to a report by football.london, Chelsea are eyeing a move for Brentford’s David Raya. After a record-breaking January, the Blues are likely to push for the Spanish goalkeeper in the summer.

While Chelsea might have made numerous signings across the last two transfer windows, they haven’t yet made an effort to sign a goalkeeper. They have added new faces in attack, midfield as well as defence. And, are now planning to further bolster their goalkeeping position in the summer by signing Brentford star David Raya.

The overhaul for Graham Potter is not over yet, he will push for a few more players in the summer and one of them will be the Spanish international. It remains to be seen what happens to the two top-class goalkeepers that they already have in their ranks. Either Kepa Arrizabalaga or Édouard Mendy will have to depart if they end up signing the Brentford number one.

Raya has featured in 20 Premier League matches so far this season in which he has kept 7 clean sheets. Brentford are currently 8th in the English top flight with 30 points in their 20 matches. They have a realistic chance of pushing for a top 6 finish. But a lot will depend on the Spanish goalkeeper. His 7 clean sheets have played a major role in their amazing run and if he continues to deliver, a top 6 finish is surely possible.

Raya is currently 5th on the goalkeeper’s list for most clean sheets in the 2022/23 Premier League season. He might have conceded 28 goals in his 20 outings but a majority of those have been because of poor performance from the backline.

The 27-year-old has 15 clean sheets in his 44 Premier League appearances. Those are great numbers for a goalkeeper in the English top flight. If the Blues acquire his services, he will surely add more stability between the posts.

Both Kepa and Mendy have been Chelsea’s number one at different stages. But, neither of them have been able to sustain their form for longer periods of time. As a result, Chelsea would love to strengthen their goalkeeping spot in the summer.

David Raya will only have 12 months left on his contract in the summer which will help the Blues acquire his services for a nominal price. And, Brentford might be willing to sell because eventually, the player will have the option to leave as a free agent in a year’s time.
