Djed Spence is reportedly set to join Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais on loan from Tottenham ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Djed Spence is on the verge of ending his frustrations at Tottenham, albeit temporarily so. The young right-back will join Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais on loan for the rest of the season. And he has arrived in France to complete his medical ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Djed Spence spent his formative years with Fulham and Middlesbrough before rising to prominence at Nottingham Forest. His loan stint with the Tricky Trees earned him interest from top clubs. And Tottenham beat the competition to sign the 22-year-old in the summer transfer window.

But the Englishman has failed to make his mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have been ahead of Spence in the pecking order. The youngster has thus managed only 43 minutes of game time across six outings thus far. And he will move to Ligue 1 to resurrect his stuttering career.

Tottenham had been ready to part ways with Spence temporarily this month. And with Doherty and Emerson only likely to depart from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer, Spence needed a temporary exit from the north London club. It looks like he will now join Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais.

Bruno Genesio has three right-backs at his disposal at Roazhon Park. But Lorenz Assignon and captain Hamari Traore are on the sidelines for several weeks. That has left the Rennes manager with Guela Doue as the only right-back option for the foreseeable future. The Ligue 1 club thus approached Tottenham over a loan deal for Spence.

The Red and Blacks are not the only Ligue 1 club to have enquired about the 22-year-old this month. Lyon also wanted to sign the Tottenham defender but will concede defeat to Rennes. The youngster has already arrived in France to complete his medical checks ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Fabrizio Romano adds that Rennes will not have any option to sign Spence permanently in the summer. Meanwhile, Tottenham will soon complete a deal worth €45 million for Pedro Porro. And Antonio Conte will hope the Spaniard ends his team’s right-back woes in the second half of the 2022/23 season.
