Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence has reportedly emerged as a January target for Ligue 1 giants Lyon.

According to a report from Daily Mail, French club Lyon are keen on signing Djed Spence this month. The Ligue 1 giants want to bring the 22-year-old defender in in as a replacement for Malo Gusto.

The 19-year-old Frenchman is reportedly heading to Chelsea after their latest offer, and Lyon will have to find a quality replacement. Chelsea defender Reece James has had persistent injury problems this season, and it is no surprise that Graham Potter is looking to bring in a quality right-back alternative before the January window closes.

Spence joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough at the start of the season, and the transfer has not gone according to plan for the young defender. The 22-year-old is yet to start a single top-flight game for Tottenham and has made just four cameos in the Premier League so far.

A player of his quality and potential needs to play more often to continue his development. And a loan spell away from Tottenham would be ideal for him. The 22-year-old is likely to get more game time at the Ligue 1 club, and it could help him continue his development.

Spence has the potential to develop into a top-quality defender in the near future, and he will be hoping to force his way into Antonio Conte’s first-team plans next season. Tottenham have had to rely on Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal as their preferred right-backs this season, despite the fact that both players have been largely unconvincing.

Signing a quality right-back remains a top priority for Tottenham this month, and they are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting CP. As for Spence, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham are prepared to sanction his departure this month before the January transfer window closes.

The 22-year-old defender had an impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest that helped him secure a move to Tottenham. And he will hope that a potential loan spell with Ligue 1 giants Lyon will have a similar and positive impact on his career.
