Tottenham are closing in on signing Pedro Porro and hope to wrap up the deal as early as possible, despite rumours of a Chelsea hijack.

Antonio Conte has been on the lookout to add further quality at wing-back this winter window. And Tottenham are on the verge of finalising a deal for their number-one target Pedro Porro. That is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Spurs are growing increasingly confident of completing a £40 million deal for the Sporting CP defender.

After a torrid couple of weeks that saw the Lillywhites suffer painful losses to Arsenal and Manchester City and intense speculation around Antonio Conte’s long-term future at the club, things are finally looking back on track at Spurs.

Spurs returned to winning ways on Monday night when they ground out a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham. The result sees them cut the gap to fourth-placed Manchester United to just three points. Most importantly, the performance demonstrated the camp’s unity, and Conte reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham after giving mixed signals earlier.

Now, the Tottenham manager is looking to welcome a couple of quality additions to his squad, with the club actively trying to wrap up multiple deals late in the January window.

Indeed, Tottenham have hijacked a move for Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma, announcing Dutch international as the Lilywhites’ first winter addition on loan with an option to buy, despite the player undergoing a medical and completing media duties ahead of his unveiling at Everton.

They have now turned all of their focus on getting a deal over the line for Conte’s priority target, Porro. Talks over the signing of the Spanish star have been ongoing since the start of the window, while Porro is thought to have already agreed to personal terms with Spurs. But the two clubs have failed to find common ground over transfer fees and payment terms.

Tottenham had a bid in the region of £30 million rejected by the Portuguese giants earlier this month, with Sporting reluctant to let Porro leave for anything less than his €45 million release clause. The North Londoners have also explored other inventive ways, trying to include a sell-on clause relating to Marcus Edwards, but all to no avail.

Transfer guru Romano claimed earlier today that the two clubs will meet once again on Wednesday in one final effort to settle on a fee. And it looks to have had the desired effect, with recent reports claiming that Tottenham are now ready to pay a fee close to that which includes add-ons in order to get the deal done.

The 23-year-old has caught the eye on the flank for the Portuguese giants with 11 assists and three goals from 25 appearances this season. Since joining Sporting, he has racked up 20 assists and 12 goals in 97 appearances.

Porro would bring a different dimension to Spurs’ attack with his pace and technical ability and should be able to make the right wing-back spot his own with relative ease considering the weak competition for the role. Of course, as we all know, no deal is done until it is announced, but it sounds as though Porro will be playing in a Spurs shirt soon enough.
