La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly working on a deal to sign Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Serie A club Fiorentina.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Gerard Romero on Jijantes, Barcelona will look to sign Sofyan Amrabat on Tuesday. The Catalan giants are working on a deal to sign the 26-year-old midfielder on loan from Fiorentina. And the Blaugrana will include a non-mandatory purchase option in the agreement.

Sofyan Amrabat has established himself as one of the most dependable performers in Serie A since joining Fiorentina. The Moroccan international’s journey in professional football started at Feyenoord. And after spells at Club Brugge and Hellas Verona, he finally struck gold at Fiorentina.

The 26-year-old has turned out 83 times thus far for Fiorentina, scoring once. And Amrabat’s stock has skyrocketed following a splendid campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Morocco. The player has consequently popped up on the radars of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona.

Premier League bigwigs Liverpool and Tottenham have been interested in Amrabat. But recent reports claimed that the Moroccan international was ready to snub English interest to join Atletico Madrid. However, Barcelona will hope to beat Los Rojiblancos to his signature before the January transfer window shuts down.

Amrabat’s potential price tag of €40 million had left Barcelona scrambling this month. And the Blaugrana will not sign the 26-year-old from Fiorentina on a permanent deal. Instead, the Catalan giants are working on a short-term transfer to bring the player on loan from the Serie A club for the rest of the season.

Barcelona will also include a non-mandatory purchase option in the deal to sign Amrabat. But it is unclear if Fiorentina will be open to such an agreement. Widespread reports last month claimed that the Serie A giants were unwilling to part ways with the well-travelled midfielder in the January transfer window.

Amrabat can be a solid addition to the Barcelona squad amid Sergio Busquets’s waning performance levels. And if the short-term loan deal is successful, the 26-year-old can become the Barcelona captain’s long-term successor. But it will be interesting to see if Fiorentina will sanction a temporary move for the Moroccan international.
