Tottenham will not cough up £80 million to sign Ecuadorian centre-back Piero Hincapie from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
According to a report by The Sun, Piero Hincapie is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The north Londoners are keen on signing the Ecuadorian centre-back in the January transfer window. But they will not pay the £80 million Bayer Leverkusen will demand to sell the youngster.
Piero Hincapie spent his formative years in his homeland before graduating from the Independiente del Valle academy. But he rose to prominence in Argentina after joining CA Talleres in August 2020. And the 21-year-old has seen his stock rise considerably since moving to Bayer Leverkusen. And he is now one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga.
The Ecuadorian international has turned out over 50 times thus far for Bayer Leverkusen, chipping in with three goals and one assist. And the player was recently impressive for his nation at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Hincapie’s progress has not gone unnoticed either, with Tottenham among his prospective suitors.
The young defender first popped up on Tottenham’s radar in the early stages of the 2022/23 season. And the player’s stock has risen since then, with several other clubs joining the race to sign him. Meanwhile, the interest from the north London club is understandable amid the inconsistencies of the centre-backs.
Cristian Romero has been top-notch for Tottenham since arriving from Italy. But defenders like Eric Dier and Ben Davies have blown hot and cold. In addition, Clement Lenglet will likely return to FC Barcelona for good when his loan stint ends. Meanwhile, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga do not feature in Antonio Conte’s plans.
So it is hardly surprising that the north Londoners have been considering signing Hincapie this month. But the player’s price tag complicates matters for Tottenham, with Bayer Leverkusen asking for £80 million. And they will not shell out £80 million to sign the Ecuadorian international from the Bundesliga club.
So Tottenham will have to identify alternatives to the 21-year-old to bolster the defensive unit this month. But Hincapie will not arrive from Bundesliga in January due to his price tag, worth £80 million. And it will be interesting to see who emerges on their radar as an alternative to the young centre-back.
