Real Madrid have reportedly been linked with a potential move for Chelsea midfield general N’Golo Kante this year.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid are looking to add more depth to their midfield unit. And they have identified Chelsea defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante as a potential target.

The 31-year-old Chelsea midfielder has had a difficult season, as he has been suffering from persistent injury problems. However, Kante is now back in first-team training and is expected to play soon. Meanwhile, midfield has been an area of concern for Real Madrid this season, and Los Blancos are hoping to bring in the necessary reinforcements later this year.

Kante will be a free agent at the end of the season, and he could be available for a nominal price in January. Real Madrid might hope to take advantage of his contract situation and sign the experienced defensive midfielder this year.

Toni Kroos and Luca Modric have not been at their best in recent weeks, and both players have looked tired as well. Real Madrid are hoping to use Kante alongside his compatriot Aurelien Tchouameni. But Chelsea might have something to say about the Merengues’ interest in the French midfield general.

The Blues have had a disappointing season themselves and are currently tenth in the Premier League table. Chelsea will be desperate to close in on the top four and secure UEFA Champions League qualification. Seeing a player like Kante leave will certainly weaken their midfield. And recent reports have claimed they are eager to tie him to a new contract.

Real Madrid might need to come forward with a lucrative offer to tempt the Blues. Chelsea have been linked with a number of midfielders this month. But they have failed to bring in the necessary reinforcements so far. The west Londoner have managed to improve their defense and attack this month but the midfield remains an area of concern.

It will be interesting to see if Graham Potter can sign a quality central midfielder before the January transfer window closes. Letting Kante leave without bringing in an alternative seems highly unlikely. And Real Madrid might need to wait until the summer transfer window to sign the French midfield general.
