Chelsea want to sign a midfielder before the January transfer window closes and have made an enquiry for Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma.

According to a report from Daily Telegraph, Chelsea have submitted an enquiry for Yves Bissouma. But Tottenham are not willing to sell the 26-year-old defensive midfielder this month. Apparently, the deal would have seen Hakim Ziyech head in the opposite direction.

Hakim Ziyech has had a difficult time at Stamford Bridge, and he has been linked to the move away from Chelsea for months now. The 29-year-old is clearly not an important first-team player for Graham Potter. And it will be interesting to see if Ziyech can secure a move away before the January window closes.

Chelsea have signed players like Mykhaylo Mudryk and Joao Felix this month, and they are closing in on the capture of Noni Madueke as well. The Moroccan international is set to fall further down the pecking order and is unlikely to get ample game time for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, signing a central midfielder seems to be a priority for Chelsea. And they have already had a bid rejected for the Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, their top target. It will be interesting to see if they are prepared to come back with an improved offer for Yves Bissouma now.

The Tottenham midfielder has had a tough time since moving to the north London club. The Mali international was one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League when he moved to Tottenham. But things have not gone according to plan for him.

He has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth under Antonio Conte. And a move away from Tottenham could be ideal for him. However, Conte will not want to weaken his squad midway through the campaign. So signing Bissouma this month is highly unlikely for Chelsea.

Chelsea have been linked with the Argentine international midfielder Enzo Fernandez as well. But they have failed to agree on a deal with Benfica. They are currently tenth in the Premier League table and will hope to secure a top-four finish. Chelsea must look to put together a winning run, which can only happen if they manage to improve their squad sufficiently.

There is no doubt that they have improved their attack and defence over the last few weeks. But bringing in a quality midfielder could make a huge difference for them. The likes of Caicedo and Bissouma would certainly improve them, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops.

As for Bissouma, the player will be frustrated with how things have unfolded at Tottenham. But it is unlikely that he would be prepared to throw in the towel just yet. The Mali international will be hoping to prove his quality at the north London club and force his way into Antonio Conte’s first-team plans in the coming months.
