Atletico Madrid reach agreement to sign Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay is reportedly on the verge of ending his Barcelona misery by joining Atletico Madrid in the coming days.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have sealed the agreement over a deal for Memphis Depay. The Dutch attacker will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with Los Rojiblancos, who will pay between €3 million and €4 million for him.

Memphis Depay has been desperate to get his career back on track after a frustrating last twelve months. The 28-year-old ended the 2021/22 season as Barcelona’s joint-top scorer. But he fell down the pecking order after Barcelona signed multiple players to beef up the offensive unit.

The Dutchman has thus managed only 206 minutes of game time across four outings this season. And as the January transfer window opened, Depay decided to leave Barcelona to resurrect his career. Such a situation captured the attention of Barcelona’s league rival Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid offloaded two attackers in the early days of the January transfer window. So they needed to delve into the market for at least one offensive reinforcement this month. Several players thus emerged on their radar before they zeroed in on a player frustrated at FC Barcelona.

Los Rojiblancos submitted an enquiry for the Dutch international last week. And with Depay capable of playing across the frontline, it is hardly surprising that he is a viable target for Atletico Madrid. And the player recently gave the green light to swap Barcelona with Atletico Madrid this month.

So while clubs like Inter Milan and Newcastle United pursued him, he was always likely to join Los Rojiblancos. And the Colchoneros have now sealed an agreement with Barcelona over a deal worth around €3-4 million. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old will soon travel to Madrid to complete his medical checks.

A separate tweet by Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Depay will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with Atletico Madrid. And he will now be eager to put his frustration at FC Barcelona behind him to resurrect his career. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Barcelona will dip into the market for a replacement this month.
