Barcelona and Newcastle United are reportedly negotiating a potential loan deal for 28-year-old Dutch attacker Memphis Depay.

According to a report by Football Insider, Barcelona and Newcastle United are in preliminary talks over a potential deal for Memphis Depay in the January transfer window. The Magpies want to sign the 28-year-old attacker on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Memphis Depay has endured a frustrating spell thus far with Barcelona. That is despite finishing as the joint-top scorer in his only full campaign with the Blaugrana. The Dutchman joined Barcelona in a Bosman move 18 months ago after running down his Lyon contract. And he started his stint brightly, proving to be the club’s only reliable scorer in the first few months.

But the 28-year-old has seen his stock plummet in the last twelve months. With players like Ferran Torres, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski joining Barcelona, Depay’s stature has reduced. And the player has managed only 206 minutes of game time across four outings this term. Such a situation has captured the attention of Newcastle United.

Newcastle United’s blossoming project has seen most signings prove to be successful. But Eddie Howe is managing a work in progress and wants to oversee more business this year. And the Newcastle United boss is keen on adding to his offensive options in the January transfer window.

Christian Pulisic was a top target for the Tyneside outfit. But with the USMNT international picking up an injury that will keep him sidelined for two months, Newcastle United will need to bring in an alternative. Depay has thus emerged as a viable target for the Magpies, who want to sign him on loan from Barcelona.

Interestingly, the Catalan giants are open to sending the 28-year-old attacker out on loan this month. That is despite Depay’s contract ending when the summer transfer window opens this year. Nonetheless, as per Football Insider, Newcastle United and Barcelona are in preliminary talks over a January deal.

Recent reports have also suggested that the Barcelona attacker is closing in on joining Inter Milan. Others have linked the 28-year-old with Atletico Madrid.  So it will be interesting to see if Newcastle United can sign the Dutchman on loan from Barcelona.
