Memphis Depay is reportedly inching closer to ending his Barcelona misery by joining Atletico Madrid this month.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Memphis Depay has edged closer to joining Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos can afford to sign the Barcelona forward in the January transfer window after Wolverhampton Wanderers activated the purchase clause for Matheus Cunha.

Memphis Depay has endured a rollercoaster ride since joining Barcelona in July 2021. The Dutch attacker was top-notch in the first half of the 2021/22 season and ended the campaign as Barcelona’s joint-top scorer that term. But he has been tumbling down the pecking order in the last twelve months.

The 28-year-old first saw his stock falling in the January transfer window after the arrival of Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And he has become a peripheral figure after Barcelona signed Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. Depay has managed just four outings thus far this season, scoring once in 206 minutes of game time. And his situation has alerted Atletico Madrid.

The Colchoneros have parted ways with two players in the January transfer window. While Matheus Cunha has joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, Joao Felix has moved to Chelsea. So Atletico Madrid will need to bring in an attacking reinforcement this month to fill the gaps in the offensive unit.

Depay has thus emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid. Despite his struggles at Spotify Camp Nou, the Dutchman remains a solid prospect for the Spanish giants. And Los Rojiblancos recently submitted an enquiry to Barcelona for the 28-year-old forward.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were reportedly pencilled in for negotiations over a deal for the player. And the Colchoneros have now edged closer to signing the former Manchester United attacker this month. That is because Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly triggered the purchase clause to sign Cunha permanently. So Atletico Madrid can afford the Barcelona forward.

Depay is thus seemingly inching closer to ending his frustrating stint with Barcelona. And a move to Atletico Madrid is on the horizon for the struggling 28-year-old. It will be interesting to see if the two parties reach a consensus on the fine details anytime soon.
