Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay has reportedly approved a potential move to Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, Memphis Depay has given the green light to join Atletico Madrid. The Barcelona attacker is ready to move across La Liga to the Civitas Metropolitano. But the two Spanish clubs continue to negotiate the terms of an agreement.

Memphis Depay has seen his career grind to a stuttering halt since joining Barcelona. While the 28-year-old had enjoyed a solid first half of the 2021/22 season, his stock has plummeted in the last twelve months. The player still managed to end the campaign as Barcelona’s joint-top scorer. But with multiple attackers joining the Blaugrana, he has become a bit-part player.

The Dutch international has managed only 206 minutes of game time across four outings this term. And with Depay’s contract running out in the summer, the ongoing transfer window is Barcelona’s last opportunity to recoup something from his departure. The player does not have a shortage of suitors either, with Atletico Madrid keen on signing him.

Atletico Madrid emerged as a contender to sign the Dutchman last month. Since then, the Spanish giants have made concrete efforts to secure the services of the Barcelona attacker. And the interest is hardly surprising, considering Matheus Cunha and Joao Felix have departed from Civitas Metropolitano.

With Cunha joining Wolverhampton Wanderers permanently, Atletico Madrid can afford to sign Depay. And recent reports have claimed that the Colchoneros have submitted an enquiry to FC Barcelona. The move is now closer to completion due to the latest major update.

Depay has given his approval to seal a move to Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window. And the player’s stance is hardly surprising, considering his fallen stature at FC Barcelona. But while the 28-year-old has given the green light, Los Rojiblancos will still need to agree to a transfer fee.

The two clubs continue to negotiate a potential deal. But with an agreement still some way away, Depay will need to hold his horses. For now, the Dutchman has edged closer to joining Atletico Madrid and ending his frustrating stint with Barcelona.
