Jack Butland has completed a loan move from Crystal Palace to Manchester United for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Manchester United have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of Jack Butland. The 29-year-old goalkeeper has arrived on loan from Crystal Palace for the rest of the 2022/23 season. And the Red Devils do not have the option to sign him permanently in the summer.

Jack Butland was once among the best goalkeepers in the Premier League during his stint with Stoke City. The Englishman spent seven years with the Potters and made his mark during their years in the top flight. But his stock has fallen since Stoke dropped to the EFL Championship.

The 29-year-old returned to the Premier League by joining Crystal Palace over two years ago. But Butland has featured sporadically for the Eagles, turning out 17 times thus far for the south London club. And he has now completed the biggest move of his career by joining Manchester United.

Manchester United delved into the market for a goalkeeper after Martin Dubravka returned to Newcastle United a few days ago. The Slovak’s move back to St. James’ Park forced Manchester United to look for a shot-stopper. That is because Tom Heaton is a mere emergency option, meaning the Red Devils needed a better backup to David de Gea. Butland thus emerged on their radar.

Manchester United took no time to agree to a loan deal with Crystal Palace. Butland thus had his medical checks at the club on Thursday. And the Red Devils have now formally completed their first January signing. Upon completing the move, Butland expressed his delight at joining Manchester United.

“This is an amazing club and one that I am now proud to represent. I’m really looking forward to working with an unbelievable goalkeeping group, supporting each other every day to create the best training and playing environment for the team.”

“I’ve played against David de Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class ‘keepers, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates. There is a lot that this group can achieve this season and I’m excited to play my part in helping everyone to reach these ambitions.”

Manchester United will not have the option to sign Butland permanently in the summer transfer window. But for now, Erik ten Hag has his desired backup goalkeeper, and it will be interesting to see when the 29-year-old makes his debut.
