Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on 21-year-old Portuguese international Goncalo Ramos amid their search for a striker.

According to 90min, Premier League giants Chelsea are keeping close tabs on SL Benfica star Goncalo Ramos ahead of the January transfer window.

The Portuguese international came through the ranks at Benfica, before making his first-team bow in the 2019/20 season. He has since made 82 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 29 goals and making 12 assists in the process.

The 21-year-old is enjoying his breakthrough season in 2022/23 and has flourished at the Estadio da Luz. The departure of Darwin Nunez to Liverpool last summer opened up a spot in attack on the senior side, and Ramos took it with both hands.

He has cemented his spot as Benfica’s go-to man this season and is the driving force behind their rise to the Liga Portugal summit. His hat trick for Portugal against Switzerland at the World Cup in Qatar was a further reminder of his talents.

An infallible goal scorer, he is exactly what Chelsea needs. The Blues let Romelu Lukaku (on loan), Michy Batshuayi, and Timo Werner leave last summer without bringing in adequate replacements. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is woefully out of form, while Armando Broja is out long-term.

Graham Potter lacks a reliable goal-getter, and that could prove costly once we enter the business end of the season. The January transfer window provides an opportunity for Chelsea to make changes, and adding Ramos to the roster would be a welcome move.

An excellent finisher who can not just hold up the ball well but also run into space, Ramos would complement Chelsea’s midfield attackers. Bringing him in mid-season could prove to be the difference between whether the Blues finish in the top four or not.

Potter and co are also eyeing another Benfica star, Enzo Fernandez, who impressed at the World Cup. With the club already said to be in advanced talks for the midfielder, it remains to be seen if the Portuguese club are willing to let two of its stars leave in the same window.

Todd Boehly has been supportive of the club’s rebuild and has already agreed to a deal for Christopher Nkunku for the summer of 2023. However, the Blues need more than just one player coming in to invigorate their frontline. Whether or not Ramos will be part of the new look side remains to be seen.
