Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy next year.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Ferland Mendy is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Premier League champions will look to prise the Frenchman away from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
Ferland Mendy has been the undisputed first-choice left-back for Real Madrid since arriving from Lyon in July 2019. The 27-year-old took no time to usurp Marcelo at the Santiago Bernabeu. And he has remained unchallenged at Real Madrid in the last three and a half seasons.
But fitness issues have plagued Mendy in the last 18 months. And that has affected the French international’s performance levels. Nonetheless, the player remains a regular for Real Madrid and has turned out 18 times thus far this season. But he might leave Real Madrid in the summer, with the situation capturing the attention of Manchester City.
Manchester City bolstered the left-back department by signing Sergio Gomez in the summer. But the young Spaniard is yet to establish a foothold at the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola preferring Joao Cancelo over him. In addition, even Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake have started as left-backs for Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Cancelo might become a full-time right-back amid Kyle Walker’s advancing years. So Manchester City might need to invest in a left-back in the coming months. Several players, including Rayan Ait-Nouri, have thus emerged on Manchester City’s radar. And Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy is also a viable target for the Premier League champions.
Recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid might consider selling the 27-year-old in the summer. So Manchester City can potentially sign the Frenchman if they meet Real Madrid’s valuation. But the Citizens will not be the only outfit pursuing Mendy, with Paris Saint-Germain also interested.
It will be interesting to see if Manchester City can beat PSG to the French defender’s signature in the summer. For now, Mendy has emerged as a viable target for the Citizens amid uncertainties surrounding his Real Madrid future.
