La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on 29-year-old Italian international Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Giovanni Di Lorenzo is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants have made their move to sign the 29-year-old, enquiring about his price. And while the valuation is high for January, Barcelona will likely launch the offensive in the summer.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo had humble beginnings, playing for several unheralded Italian clubs. He rose to prominence during a two-year stint with Empoli before finally joining a big club in July 2019. And the Italian international has not looked back since moving to Napoli, establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in Serie A.

The 29-year-old is also the first-choice right-back for Italy and was a regular when they won UEFA Euro 2020. Di Lorenzo has turned out over 150 times for Napoli, chipping in with nine goals and 25 assists. And the player’s progress has captured the attention of several bigwigs, including FC Barcelona.

Barcelona will delve into the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana signed Hector Bellerin on deadline day this past summer. But the Spaniard was only an emergency signing after Barcelona failed to bring in Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Foyth. And with Bellerin failing to make his mark, he will likely depart from Camp Nou next year.

The Catalan giants, thus, need to dip their toes in the market again for a right-back. And with Sergi Roberto no longer a dependable figure, Barcelona will need a definitive solution. Several right-backs, including Benjamin Pavard, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar over a summer move. But Juan Foyth is the top target for the Blaugrana.

However, the Argentine international is too expensive for Barcelona due to his release clause. And the Catalan outfit will unlikely sign Foyth in the summer transfer window. 29-year-old Italian international Di Lorenzo has now emerged as a viable alternative. And his price tag might be affordable after Barcelona probed Napoli for his valuation.

So the Catalan giants have made their first move for the Napoli captain. And it will be interesting to see if the 29-year-old Italian international joins Barcelona in the summer. For now, Di Lorenzo has emerged as a viable target for the Blaugrana.
