La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have moved on from Juan Foyth, as they will not be able to afford to pay €54.6 million to sign him.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Juan Foyth is no longer a target for Barcelona. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has become a prohibitive option due to his hefty release clause, worth €54.6 million. And Barcelona will prioritise signing cost-effective candidates like Benjamin Pavard and Thomas Meunier.

Juan Foyth has resurrected his career since joining Villarreal from Tottenham Hotspur a couple of years ago. The Argentine international had enjoyed a solid 2020/21 campaign on loan at Estadio de la Ceramica. And Villarreal signed him permanently last year to end his horrific stint with Tottenham.

The 24-year-old has endured a difficult 2022/23 season thus far, with injuries halting his progress. And Foyth has managed only six appearances across all competitions. The player did not feature much at the 2022 FIFA World Cup either, securing four minutes of game time as Argentina went all the way in Qatar. Nonetheless, Foyth has captured the attention of Barcelona.

Barcelona attempted to sign the World Cup winner in the summer transfer window. But his hefty release clause stopped the Catalan giants in their tracks. While Barcelona’s interest in Foyth remains, Villarreal will again demand €54.6 million to part ways with the player next year.

Barcelona will need to invest in a right-back for the second successive summer transfer window. The Blaugrana had signed Hector Bellerin on a free transfer a couple of months ago. But the Spaniard has failed to make his mark at Spotify Camp Nou and will likely leave Barcelona next year.

Foyth had thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, who considered prioritising his signature. But the Catalan giants have again found a stumbling block in his release clause. And they do not have the means to shell out €54.6 million to sign the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner. And Barcelona will look for alternatives for Foyth in the market.

Thomas Meunier and Benjamin Pavard are cost-effective alternatives on Barcelona’s radar. And it will be interesting to see who among the Bundesliga-based duo joins the Blaugrana next year. As for Foyth, he will likely remain at Villarreal beyond the summer transfer window.
