Cash-rich Newcastle United are amongst the frontrunners to land World Cup finalist French international striker Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach in January amid his contractual situation.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Newcastle United are looking to sign Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram, who could be available for as little as €12 million. The report details how the Magpies “start with a lot of advantage” thanks to their uber-rich owners, who enable them to offer lucrative personal terms to the player.

Marcus Thuram, the son of legendary French defender Lilian, joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Guingamp in the summer of 2019. He has enjoyed a productive spell so far in Germany and has made a total of 119 appearances for the German outfit across all competitions, scoring 41 goals and providing 26 assists in the process.

Thuram has primarily operated as a number nine for Gladbach, but he is also comfortable operating from the left side of the attack. After failing to show his potency last season, he has rediscovered his scoring boots for Gladbach this term. The France international has had a superb first half of the current season with the Bundesliga outfit, registering 13 goals and four assists from just 17 appearances across all competitions.

However, the Frenchman will become a free agent in the summer, as his current contract with Die Fohlen expires at the end of the season. The Bundesliga outfit will be looking to receive some sort of transfer sum for their asset as they look to avoid losing him for free down the line.

Thuram’s impressive goalscoring run in the Bundesliga helped him to get a call-up for the French national team in the World Cup 2022. He only had limited minutes in Qatar but made a good impression when given the chance, showcasing his wide array of attributes on the world stage to place himself in the shop window.

The Borussia Monchengladbach attacker has been linked with a move to a whole host of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, but high-flying Newcastle United appear to be at the front of the queue to sign Thuram.

The Magpies hope to use his compatriot Allan Saint-Maximin — who knows Thuram from his time with the French national team youth setup — to help influence his former teammate’s decision, and make a good case for a move to the North-East of England.

The fan-favorite maverick winger has recently revealed he has held talks with Thuram and tried to persuade his French counterpart to join him at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United will look to bolster their attacking options in January as they look to sustain their top-four push. Thuram possesses blistering pace and can play anywhere across the front line. The nine-cap France international is a really explosive frontman and a constant menace for opposing defenders.

His pace, sharp movement, and physical strength are akin to Newcastle talisman Callum Wilson, who has a dismal injury record at St James’ Park. The 25-year-old also possesses a strong aerial presence and good hold-up play.

At €12 million, Thuram can be considered a huge bargain in the current transfer market. The Toon Army must move fast to secure his signature before other elites make their move.
