La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly in talks with RB Leipzig over a deal for Josko Gvardiol, a top target for Chelsea.

According to a report by 90min, Real Madrid and RB Leipzig are in talks over a possible deal for Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender is also a target for Chelsea, with the Blues confident of securing his services next year.

Josko Gvardiol has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world in the last 18 months. The Croat first became a household name after joining RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb last year. And his stock has skyrocketed following an excellent campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 20-year-old was one of the best defenders at the grand tournament and has been among the top players in the Bundesliga. Gvardiol has turned out 65 times for Leipzig, who might have his services for only a few more months. That is because the youngster has become a hot property in the market, with Real Madrid and Chelsea keen on signing him.

Real Madrid might view Gvardiol as a two-pronged solution at the back amid uncertainties surrounding the futures of Nacho and Ferland Mendy. The former has not committed himself to Real Madrid amid long-dragging contract talks. On the other hand, Mendy might be on the chopping block if his performances do not improve.

Recent reports have claimed that the reigning La Liga champions have submitted an offer for the 20-year-old. And Real Madrid and RB Leipzig are currently in talks over a possible deal for Gvardiol. But that does not faze Chelsea, as the Blues are aware of the interest from other bigwigs.

In addition, the west Londoners are confident of securing the services of the Croatian defender. The interest from Chelsea is hardly surprising, considering Thiago Silva is in the twilight of his career. In addition, Kalidou Koulibaly is on the wrong side of 30 and has yet to make his mark for Chelsea.

Gvardiol has already expressed his desire to join both Chelsea and Real Madrid. So it will be interesting to see which club will win the race to sign the Croat. For now, the two European powerhouses remain in a battle for the RB Leipzig defender.
