Tottenham face a difficult prospect of convincing Brighton to sell Alexis Mac Allister, with Antonio Conte keen on signing the Argentine.

Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Tottenham may find it difficult to knock on Brighton & Hove Albion’s door and ask to sign Alexis Mac Allister in January. The 23-year-old World Cup winner only signed a new deal in October, and the Seagulls are unlikely to sanction a move so soon.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup concluded with a terrific final at the Lusail Stadium. Kylian Mbappe and France set the tone with a terrific comeback, but Lionel Messi’s Argentina trumped the former champions with a penalty shootout victory. While the world will remember the PSG attacker, there were few other top performers for the team, including a certain Alexis Mac Allister.

Who might have thought Brighton & Hove Albion would have a World Cup winner in their ranks? Mac Allister was one of Argentina’s most important players. He played six games in Qatar, scoring and assisting once, including the second goal in the final when he set up Angel Di Maria.

Mac Allister has seen his rise in English football after accomplished performances for Brighton. He broke through under Graham Potter and has remained a key figure under Roberto De Derbi. The Argentine international only signed a new deal back in October, valid until 2025.

Brighton also have the option to extend the contract by another season, meaning they are relaxed about the 23-year-old World Cup winner’s future. Yet, Tottenham are one of the clubs keen on the Argentine midfielder as Antonio Conte seeks a new player to add creativity.

Mac Allister could prove an excellent option if Tottenham manage to sign him. The north Londoners are already looking at Atalanta ace Ruslan Malinovskyi, and Conte would also take the chance on the Brighton star. But in the current climate, it is not easy to see the Seagulls selling the 23-year-old World Cup winner in January.

Additionally, Brighton would demand a considerable fee for Mac Allister if the player wants to move away from the Amex Stadium. Of course, Tottenham will remain alert to his situation, but the price tag the Seagulls will ask for in January could be unprecedented.

Hence, it is not easy to envisage a deal in January for Tottenham, although the summer transfer window could open a new door. For now, Mac Allister could remain with Brighton until the current season ends.
