Chelsea are exploring their options with Tammy Abraham as the Premier League side targets another striker in January.
According to Calcio Mercato, Chelsea could ponder re-signing Tammy Abraham from Roma 18 months after letting the striker leave. They have a buy-back clause inserted in the agreement with the Serie A side, although the Blues do not wish to pay the whole amount.
Roma convinced Tammy Abraham that moving to the Italian capital was a wise decision 18 months ago, with Jose Mourinho leading the charge. The 25-year-old striker flourished under the Portuguese manager, helping the club win the UEFA Conference League by the end of the season.
After a prolific first season, the goals have dried up for the 25-year-old striker this term. Subsequently, he did not receive a call-up to England’s World Cup squad despite Gareth Southgate taking him on board regularly before the tournament.
Since the summer, speculation was rife about a return to England, with a host of clubs vying for his signature. Roma’s huge valuations proved problematic for Premier League clubs. Chelsea were also mentioned as a possible suitor, but they ended up making a last-gasp signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, possibly due to economic viabilities.
Abraham might remain open about returning to the Premier League, and Chelsea are again in the news with interest in their former striker. The Blues recently lost young forward Armando Broja to an ACL injury, as the Albanian leaves a huge void.
While he wasn’t starting regularly, Graham Potter was steadily integrating him since the striker signed a long-term deal earlier in the season. Chelsea have swiftly moved to sign David Datro Fofana from Molde; they are reportedly in the market for another marksman.
Abraham has plenty of interest from Premier League clubs but may prefer a return to Stamford Bridge if presented with an opportunity. Chelsea already have a buy-back option with Roma for a sum close to €80 million.
The Blues are reportedly not willing to exercise that option as they do not want to pay up the price mentioned. They could, however, look to negotiate with Roma and come to a reasonable conclusion over the fee. Whether the Serie A side is willing to accept new terms, remains the question.
Chelsea could use the Broja injury as a reason to strengthen their frontline. From how the season has transpired, they are not entirely convinced Aubameyang or Kai Havertz are fit to lead the line for the remainder of the season. At the same time, Fofana is a prolific striker but vastly inexperienced in English football.
