Arsenal have reportedly entered the chase for AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham, with Aston Villa also plotting an ambitious swoop for the 25-year-old Englishman.
According to LaRoma.it, Arsenal are interested in securing the services of Tammy Abraham. The Gunners are closely monitoring the player, who is also earmarked as a potential coup by fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.
Arsenal tried to sign Abraham last year, but the move failed to materialise due to limited funds. However, the north Londoners could look to make another move for the 25-year-old in the coming months, with reports claiming the striker is unsure of his long-term future in Italy. And AS Roma are willing to listen to offers for him in January after his rocky start to the current season.
Itis safe to say many raised an eyebrow when Abraham chose Italy as his landing spot after leaving Chelsea in 2021, despite heavy Premier League interest. Roma swooped in, with Jose Mourinho tempting Abraham to the Eternal City.
Following his arrival from Chelsea, the 25-year-old had a superb first season in the Italian capital. He featured in 53 games in all competitions for the Giallorossi, scoring 27 goals as they won the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. Abraham became an instant hit among the Roma faithful after playing a pivotal role in their first-ever European triumph.
The feeling was that he would improve on those numbers in his second season in Italy. But it has not worked out like that. Abraham has managed a paltry tally of four goals and two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions. He was even booed by his own fans after he was taken off in the 70th minute for Andrea Belotti against Torino in their final game prior to the World Cup break.
Abraham has also started to irritate Mourinho with his misfiring form in front of goal. And a recent report stated he is evaluating his alternatives given he is well aware of the Premier League interest in his services.
Roma, for their part, are reportedly ready to listen to bids for Abraham in January. But the offer must be lucrative for them to sanction an exit. Manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bolster his squad and is in need of additional funds.
Among his suitors, his former-club Chelsea have the first say on Abraham’s next move. The Blues are hesitant and unsure of whether they should trigger his buyback clause, worth a whopping €80 million.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, have already come forward to express their interest in an audacious move to re-sign Abraham. He previously played for the Villains on loan during the 2018/19 season. Abraham’s 25-goal tally helped the team gain promotion via the play-offs, and he is held in high regard for his time at the club. If he were to return to Villa Park in 2023, a new club record would almost certainly be required.
As for Arsenal, there are concerns about talisman Gabriel Jesus if he goes through a slump or has an injury layoff, leaving Eddie Nketiah as the sole option up top, which will jeopardise their title hopes. While the acquisition will cost an arm and a leg, Abraham could offer Arsenal the depth they need to compete at the top of the league season after season.
