According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona might not sign Thomas Meunier from Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window. The Bundesliga giants are reluctant to part ways with the 31-year-old this winter.
Thomas Meunier has endured a stop-start stint with Borussia Dortmund in the last two years. The Bundesliga giants would have had high hopes for the Belgian international when he arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2020. But the player has encountered a few fitness issues during this period.
The injury woes have also plagued Meunier this season, and he has managed 14 appearances thus far. The 31-year-old recently featured for Belgium at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the Red Devils suffered the ignominy of an early exit. But that has not affected his suitors, with Barcelona interested in a January move.
The Catalan giants have been keen on signing Meunier for the better part of 2022. And Barcelona attempted to sign the experienced full-back in the last two transfer windows. But a move has never materialised, with Meunier also speaking about his disappointment at failing to join the Blaugrana.
But the interest in Meunier has not waned, and the Catalan giants have been keeping tabs on him. And the eagerness to sign the player makes sense, considering Hector Bellerin’s inconsistent performances. The Spaniard will likely leave Barcelona next year, thus opening up a spot in the squad.
But Barcelona will have a huge stumbling block while pursuing the Borussia Dortmund full-back. That is because the Bundesliga giants do not want to part ways with the 31-year-old in the January transfer window. So Barcelona might have to identify alternatives for the Belgian international before the turn of the year.
