Manchester United are not expected to sign Yann Sommer in January, and a summer move could be in the offing.
As per Sky Sport Deutschland, Yann Sommer is not expected to leave Borussia Monchengladbach in January for Manchester United as the Red Devils will target to bolster their other concerned areas.
Erik ten Hag has continued to put his faith in David de Gea despite the Spaniard’s limitation with the feet. And the experienced Spanish goalkeeper has worked on this aspect to impress the Manchester United manager.
The Dutch manager is quite satisfied with his progression. But ideally, a new goalkeeper could complement ten Hag’s vision going forward. There has also been an ongoing situation regarding de Gea’s current contractual status at Manchester United.
The 32-year-old is in the last six months of his contract. And despite having a one-year extension clause, Manchester United are pretty adamant to make him reduce his current wage.
Martin Dubravka arrived from Newcastle United on loan this past summer and has barely played a competitive match. He will be returning to his parent club when the contract expires next summer. Meanwhile, Dean Henderson is unlikely to play a second fiddle at Manchester United anymore.
The 25-year-old has a pretty lengthy contract and the club could try to cash in on him next time. Meanwhile, Yann Sommer has been at Borussia Monchengladbach since 2014 and has turned out to be one of the most underrated keepers in the Bundesliga.
The 33-year-old could be a short-term fix for Manchester United as the Premier League giants have prioritised the signing of FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa as a potential replacement for their current number one. The young Portuguese international has been a revelation and could be Manchester United’s long-term plan.
Sommer has not made up his mind. But the 33-year-old will be taking note of his surroundings and will take a decision once the World Cup break is over. Switzerland were handed a thrashing at the hands of Portugal in the Round of 16 and crashed out of the tournament in a very ill-fashioned manner.
Sommer could be an understudy to de Gea and will challenge him for the number one spot should he arrive on a free transfer at Manchester United next year. But for now, the 33-year-old is not on the agenda at Old Trafford for the January transfer window.
