David de Gea will have to take a substantial pay cut to continue his Manchester United journey, with his current contract expiring next summer.

As per Daily Star, Manchester United are prepared to offer fresh terms to David de Gea, albeit with reduced wages. The Spanish goalkeeper has been one of the best shot-stoppers in the history of the Premier League and is currently in his 12th season with the Red Devils.

Following some horrific performances in the first two matches, calls were made to replace de Gea in between the sticks. But Erik ten Hag was adamant in his stance, and the bet has paid off as the 32-year-old has produced some majestic performances on a number of occasions.

His passing range has also improved drastically, and he has been more agile in his territory more than before. The Spaniard has already spoken of his willingness to extend his association with the club. But a lot of things need to be done to accelerate new contract talks.

The current Manchester United number one takes home to the tune of £375,000 per week, and he is the second highest-paid player at the club after Cristiano Ronaldo. The Manchester United management ideally wants to slash his wages by almost £100,000 which could add a whopping £5 million to their coffers.

There is a one-year extension option already in his existing deal. But Manchester United will not exercise that option given the current scenario. The Red Devils have had scouted alternate options in case the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper leaves. And FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa has remained their number one target throughout.

The Portuguese international has already been a hit in the European circuit with his performance this season. And a number of clubs are expected to circle around for his signature, with Barcelona also interested.

De Gea has been one of the senior members of the Manchester United squad and has been very vocal in the dressing room. He is pretty settled in his life in Manchester and would love to spend the remaining part of his career at Old Trafford. But for that significant adjustments need to be done.
