Manchester United have reportedly offered €46 million to sign Dutch international attacker Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.

According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United have now submitted their first offer for Cody Gakpo, and it is believed to be in the region of €46 million. The report further states that PSV Eindhoven are holding out for a fee of around €58 million. And it will be interesting to see if the two clubs can come to an agreement in the coming weeks.

The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League at the start of the season as well. But Gakpo stayed at PSV, and he has been outstanding for them this season. He had 13 goals and 17 assists to his name before heading to the World Cup, and Gakpo has been outstanding in the marquee event as well.

The Dutch attacker has three goals to his name at the World Cup. And his performances have prompted the Premier League giants to come forward with an offer for him. And chief among his suitors are Manchester United, who are prioritising signing him in January.

It is no secret that Manchester United will need to improve their attacking department in January and Gakpo, who is reportedly open to joining them, could prove to be a quality acquisition. The Red Devils recently terminated the contract of Cristiano Ronaldo, and they will have to bring in a quality alternative in the coming weeks.

Manchester United are fighting for a place in the top four, and they cannot hope to achieve that with Marcus Rashford as their only reliable goalscorer. Gakpo would add more goals and creativity to the side. Furthermore, he is versatile enough to play anywhere across the front three.

Erik ten Hag will need to strengthen his squad substantially during the January transfer window. And bringing in a quality attacker should be his top priority. Manchester United certainly have the finances to pay the reported €58 million asking price, but they will be hoping to negotiate a lesser fee.

It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few weeks following the €46 million bid by Manchester United. The 23-year-old Dutchman has shown that he is ready to play at a higher level, and a move to Manchester United could help him showcase his qualities in an elite European league.
