PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo insists he will consider a move if Manchester United come back to acquire his services in January.
In an interview with NRC, Cody Gakpo has opened the door to a possible future move to Manchester United. The Dutch forward was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer but could not get it done.
Gakpo has taken his club form to the international level as the 23-year-old has continued to shine for his country. Three goals in his first World Cup campaign speak volumes of his talent, and Manchester United are ready to go all out for the player in January.
The Dutchman has become the most popular name during this World Cup as a host of clubs have been taking note of his development. He is designated to step up to his next big move, and Manchester United would be hoping the player chooses them as his next destination.
Leeds United were very close to securing a deal on the deadline day, but the move was foiled and the player remained at the Dutch club. However, the player felt a bit saddened when his desire to play in the Premier League failed. Gakpo said, “That was a tough period.”
“I learned from that. I’m going to do it differently. What comes, that comes. Suppose you want to go from RKC to PSV, but that club is not coming. Then you can panic.”
“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”
Gakpo will still have a quarter-final to play against Argentina, and this might be the stage he has been waiting for. His knack to appear lively on big occasions would need to be repeated as a semi-final appearance for the Netherlands would be too tempting for the youngster.
As for the links with Manchester United, recent reports have claimed that PSV have hiked Gakpo’s asking price. And it will be interesting to see if a move to Manchester United sees the light of day, as the Red Devils look to replace Cristiano Ronaldo with Gakpo.
