Manchester United have looked at Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier, a target for Barcelona, in their search for a right-back.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Thomas Meunier could be an alternative option for Manchester United. The Borussia Dortmund defender has also been on the radar of Barcelona for quite a long time.
A right-back has been a priority for the Red Devils as they have monitored a number of players with. The likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Denzel Dumfries have emerged on Manchester United’s radar recently. Both the Dutch defenders have been at the World Cup. But the latter hogged all the spotlight as he led his country to the quarter-finals with an excellent display against Australia.
Manchester United are ready to go to any extent to provide a competent cover to Diogo Dalot, who has been the preferred choice for Erik ten Hag. Aaron Wan-Bissaka will certainly be leaving Old Trafford next month, and Manchester United have to figure out his replacement.
With the club still fighting on four fronts, the requirement of an additional right-back could be stretched in the next few months as Manchester United are yet to breach into the most important part of the season.
Dalot’s involvement with Portugal might exhaust him from getting a bit of rest on his own. And a worthy understudy should join Manchester United. Barcelona have also desired Meunier to be a part of their entity. But their financial situation does not allow them to bend much.
With the player’s contract expiring in 2024, a cut-price deal might be agreed upon in January. But Barcelona are yet to initiate contact with his entourage. This could trigger massive movement as his suitors would be encouraged to make a move.
Meunier’s struggles were pretty visible at the World Cup as Belgium’s stay was pretty short-lived in Qatar. A 31-year-old defender should not be in Manchester United’s long-term plans. So this might only be a short-term fix for the Premier League giants.
Manchester United also need to sort out Dalot’s current contractual situation, as the Portuguese international has entered his last six months of the contract. Meunier might not turn down the lure of the Premier League, and Manchester United might make a move sooner or later. It will be interesting to see if Barcelona pounce before that.
