Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Italian defender Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool and Manchester City are interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini. The 18-year-old is highly rated by La Dea and is likely to cost around €30 million.

Both Liverpool and Manchester City could use defensive additions, and Scalvini would be a quality addition to their back four. The Premier League champions have been monitoring the Italian defender for three months.

Liverpool have a number of quality defenders, but the likes of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have had their fair share of injuries. The same can be said about Manchester City, who have been without Aymeric Laporte due to injuries from time to time.

Liverpool and Manchester United could certainly use more quality and depth, and Scalvini would be a superb addition. The two Premier League clubs are not the only bigwigs trying to sign the Atalanta defender. And Scalvini is thought to be on the radar of Bayern Munich, Juventus and Inter Milan as well. Chelsea have also shown interest in him.

The reported €30 million asking price seems quite reasonable for a player of his potential. Scalvini could end up justifying the investment if he moves to Liverpool or Manchester City in the coming months. The 18-year-old is a prodigious talent who must choose his next club carefully. Scalvini must look to join a team where he will get to play ample first-team football.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool or Manchester City are prepared to give the Italian defender the necessary game-time assurances before signing him. Sitting on the bench at a top club would affect Scalvini’s development negatively, and the player needs to think long and hard before making a decision regarding his future.

Alternatively, Scalvini could look to sign for either of the two Premier League clubs and then go out on loan in order to get regular first-team experience under his belt.

Clubs like Bayern Munich, Juventus and Inter Milan have a proven track record of nurturing talented young players as well. And they also have the means to pay the €30 million asking price as well. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool and Manchester City can fend off the competition from their European counterparts and sign the talented young defender.
