Barcelona will reportedly have to fend off competition from PSG in the race to sign veteran Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Ilkay Gundogan is the subject of interest from PSG over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The veteran Manchester City midfielder is also a target for Barcelona, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Ilkay Gundogan has established himself as one of the best midfielders of his generation during his professional career. The 32-year-old first rose to prominence at Borussia Dortmund before earning a move to England in 2016. And he has been a pivotal figure for Manchester City in the last half a dozen years.

In addition, Gundogan, who has turned out 273 times for Manchester City, has become the club captain following Fernandinho’s summer departure. But the English champions are in a spot of bother over the German international’s long-term future as he is in the final few months of his deal. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona and PSG.

Barcelona will enter the market to find the ideal successor to Sergio Busquets. The Barcelona captain is in the twilight of his glittering career and might depart from Spotify Camp Nou next summer. Gundogan has thus emerged as a viable target for the Blaugrana over a possible Bosman move.

Recent reports have also claimed that Barcelona will scout Gundogan at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But the Catalan giants face stiff competition from PSG in the race to sign the veteran midfielder on a free transfer.

PSG bolstered the midfield department heavily in the summer transfer window. But Christophe Galtier is reportedly eager for more fresh faces in the unit, compelling Les Parisiens to remain in the market for a midfielder. Gundogan is thus an option worth considering for the French champions.

Meanwhile, recent reports have claimed that the 32-year-old has held “loose” contract talks with Manchester City. And the Citizens will be desperate to keep hold of the German midfielder beyond the ongoing season. So it will be interesting to see if Barcelona or PSG can turn his head with an approach next summer.
