London giants Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly set their sights on wantaway Barcelona forward Memphis Depay over a possible January move.
According to a report by 90min, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a possible move in the January transfer window. The wantaway Barcelona forward is also a target for Manchester United.
Memphis Depay is desperate to get his career back on track after a forgettable 2022 thus far. While the 28-year-old finished the 2021/22 season as Barcelona’s joint-top scorer, he had already gone down the pecking order before the campaign ended. And the player has become an afterthought this term.
A hamstring injury has further hampered the Dutch attacker, who has managed only three outings thus far this season. So Depay wants to leave Barcelona only 18 months after he arrived at Camp Nou in a Bosman move. Such a situation has captured the attention of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Tottenham will likely enter the market for an attacking reinforcement due to concerns about Son Heung-min’s availability. In addition, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski’s absence left Antonio Conte short in the first half of the season. So bolstering the offensive unit should be the way to go for Tottenham in January.
Several attackers, including Ben Brereton Diaz, have thus emerged on Tottenham’s radar, with Depay also a viable target. But the north Londoners face stiff competition from Manchester United in the race to sign the wantaway Barcelona forward.
Depay previously had a forgettable stint with Manchester United before joining Lyon in January 2017. But he has come leaps and bounds since his struggles at Old Trafford half a dozen years ago. And the Barcelona attacker is capable of playing a central role, which might appeal to the Red Devils. So it is hardly surprising that recent reports have linked Manchester United with him.
Depay reportedly wants to leave Barcelona as a free agent as he wants to recoup a handsome transfer bonus. Signing the wantaway Barcelona attacker on a free transfer will make him an even more appealing target. So it will be interesting to see if Tottenham and Manchester United step up their efforts to land him.
