Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been monitoring Ben Brereton Diaz as they eye a cut-price deal for the Blackburn Rovers striker.

According to 90min, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Ben Brereton Diaz from Blackburn Rovers in the upcoming January transfer window. The report adds that Spurs have been keeping a close track of the Chile international this season and might make a play for him when the transfer market opens after the World Cup.

The 23-year-old striker had a strange youth career. He spent time in the youth ranks at Manchester United, Stoke City, and Nottingham Forest before making his senior debut for the Garibaldi. Brereton Diaz spent two years at Forest before joining Blackburn Rovers on a permanent basis in 2019.

And it is safe to say that he has been a revelation ever since his move to Ewood Park. Brereton Diaz emerged as a prolific goalscorer during the 2021/22 season, finding the back of the net 22 times in the league last term, establishing himself as one of the best attackers in the Championship.

The 23-year-old has also been in fine form for Rovers this term, recording ten goals in 22 competitive appearances, with his latest strike coming against West Ham United in the EFL Cup win in the midweek. The player’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United becoming the latest top club to express their interest in securing his services.

With less than a year left on his current contract, he could be poached for a cut-price deal in January or for free when the summer window comes along, with the latter looking more likely at this point in time. This has put several clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, on alert.

While Spurs signed a new striker over the summer in Richarlison in a big-money move, they failed to get the Nicolo Zaniolo deal over the line despite their best efforts. It shows Tottenham may still be on the lookout for another addition or two in 2023 to add to their attacking contingent. Interestingly, Zaniolo remains on Tottenham’s radar.

From Spurs’ perspective, signing Brereton Diaz is a low-risk move that could potentially hand them high dividends if the forward ends up shining in north London. At 23, he is just going to get better and is very versatile across the frontline. So picking him up for cheap or even free would be a fantastic deal to explore, because they may sell him on for more down the line even if his transfer does not work out perfectly.

The 23-year-old can find the back of the net from close range and also has a variety of finishes in his locker, including long-range, volley, and headed goals. Brereton Diaz is not afraid of being direct and take on his man either, and this fearlessness could provide a real injection of much-needed enthusiasm at Tottenham.

Brereton Diaz is not the only striker on Antonio Conte’s shortlist, with in-form Bayern Munich and Cameroonian striker Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting and Barcelona’s wantaway star Memphis Depay also believed to be on Tottenham’s radar.
