Serie A giants Napoli are reportedly interested in signing veteran Spanish defender Jordi Alba from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jordi Alba is the subject of interest from Napoli over a possible move next year. The Serie A giants want to sign the veteran Barcelona defender in the January transfer window to bolster their prospects of winning the Scudetto.

Jordi Alba is currently in his second stint with Barcelona, returning to Camp Nou from Valencia over a decade ago. And in that period, he has established himself as one of the best full-backs of his generation. But Alba’s performance levels have waned considerably in the last few years.

The 33-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Camp Nou this season, managing to start eight games. And with Alba’s contract winding down in a little over 18 months, he faces an uncertain future at FC Barcelona. Such a situation has captured the attention of Napoli.

The Italian giants have been in fine form this season climbing to the top of the Serie A table after an unbeaten start to the league campaign. Napoli also qualified for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 by finishing atop Group A, ahead of Liverpool. But the Partenopei might enter the market for reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Serie A heavyweights want to sign a left-back to bolster their Scudetto prospects. But the interest in Alba is intriguing, considering Luciano Spalletti has two top-notch options in Mario Rui and Mathias Olivera. And with the veteran Barcelona defender blowing hot and cold, it is unclear what he will bring to the table for Napoli.

Alba might instead revel at a club like Inter Miami. But if the Serie A giants pursue the veteran defender, he will bring a winning mentality with him. And Napoli might soon launch the offensive to prise Alba away from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

It will be interesting to see if Barcelona will be open to cashing in on Alba. But with recent reports claiming that they want to hand Marcos Alonso a new deal, the 33-year-old might be on borrowed time at Camp Nou. It will be interesting to see if a Serie A adventure awaits him.
