Marcos Alonso, whose current contract will expire next summer, is reportedly set to put pen to paper on a new deal with Barcelona.

According to a report by ESPN, Marcos Alonso is in advanced talks with Barcelona over extending his contract by two years. The Spanish defender signed a one-year deal when he arrived at Spotify Camp Nou from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Marcos Alonso has been one of the most polarising players in Europe for several years but has still managed to play for some of the continent’s biggest clubs. He enjoyed a fruitful six-year stint with Chelsea, featuring regularly for the west London club. But the 31-year-old ended his spell with the Blues by joining Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard got his Chelsea contract mutually terminated to join Barcelona, and he has reprised multiple roles at Camp Nou. Alonso has turned out 11 times for the Blaugrana, featuring as a centre-back and a left-back while chipping in with one goal. But the player’s future has been the subject of intense speculation just two months after his arrival.

What has not helped matters for the Spanish defender is that the Catalan giants have shown interest in several left-backs. The latest player to emerge on Barcelona’s radar is Caio Henrique, with recent reports also linking the Blaugrana with Alejandro Grimaldo, Javi Galan, and Alex Moreno.

In addition, Inigo Martinez is closing in on joining Barcelona as a replacement for the now-retired Gerard Pique. So despite the speculation surrounding several defenders, including Jordi Alba, Alonso has faced an uncertain future at Camp Nou. But the Spaniard will not leave Barcelona after only one year unless things change dramatically.

That is because Barcelona and Alonso are in advanced talks over extending his contract. The player’s current deal will expire on June 30, 2023. But if the discussions between Barcelona and Alonso progress smoothly, he will have an additional 24 months left before he becomes a free agent.

It will be interesting to see if Barcelona and the 31-year-old conclude discussions to extend his deal quickly. For now, it seems likely that Alonso will remain at Spotify Camp Nou beyond the ongoing season.
