La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, a target for arch-rival Barcelona.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Enzo Fernandez has popped up on the radar of Real Madrid. The 21-year-old Benfica midfielder is also a target for Barcelona. And the two La Liga heavyweights might lock horns for another hot property in the market.
Enzo Fernandez has been on an upward trajectory in the last few years, enjoying a sharp rise in stature at River Plate. The player’s exploits for the Argentine giants earned him a move to Europe, and he joined Benfica in the summer. And the youngster has taken no time to establish himself as a pivotal figure for the Eagles.
The 21-year-old has been a regular for Benfica this season, turning out 21 times while chipping in with three goals and four assists. Fernandez might also travel with Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And his performances have captured the attention of several bigwigs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Enzo Fernandez has been on Barcelona’s radar for much of 2022. The Blaugrana even tried to sign the 21-year-old Argentine midfielder in the summer before focusing on other targets. And the continued interest is understandable amid Sergio Busquets’s struggle in the ongoing campaign.
The Catalan giants are reportedly laying down a succession plan for Busquets. And while Fernandez will not be a like-for-like replacement for the Barcelona captain, he is a viable target. But the Blaugrana will have to fend off stiff competition from Real Madrid to land the Benfica midfielder.
Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are in the twilight of their respective careers, thus compelling Real Madrid to plan for life after the duo. Several midfielders, including Jude Bellingham, have thus emerged on Los Blancos’ radar. And Enzo Fernandez is also an option worth considering, even though he will not necessarily bolster the creative department.
