Barcelona reportedly favour a move for veteran Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante to fill up their gaps in the midfield.

According to Spanish reporter Albert Roge, Barcelona are interested in making a move for French international N’Golo Kante. The veteran Chelsea midfielder will be out of contract next summer, and the Catalan giants could grab him on a free transfer.

Sergio Busquets’s rapid decline has forced Barcelona to search for a potential successor. And his long reign at Camp Nou could come to an end in 2023. The 34-year-old’s current deal will end next summer, and he is destined to leave Nou Camp.

Barcelona activated a number of economic levers in an attempt to sort out their financial mess. They have managed to douse the fire for now, but their on-field performance has not been up to the mark. The Blaugrana crashed out of the UEFA Champions League earlier this week and will compete in the Europa League this season.

A plethora of players, like Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, were brought in as a part of their rebuilding phase. But as a whole, Barcelona are yet to put out dominating performances week in week out.

Kante is reportedly in talks with Chelsea for a new contract and wants to remain at Stamford Bridge. But the French midfielder is currently nursing an injury and has already been ruled out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Kante has maintained a level of consistency since his arrival in the Premier League and has collected almost all possible medals during his stints with Leicester City and Chelsea. But his injury could be a telling factor as it might diminish his dynamism.

So Barcelona might not want to affect their plans. They are also on the verge of finalising a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves. But doubts have emerged whether the Portuguese international can adapt to the condition as he has pretty large boots to fill. So Kante is now the favoured target for Barcelona to replace Busquets

Kante played a pivotal role when France lifted the World Cup back in 2018 as he dictated the play from the base of the midfield. The 31-year-old might have lost his pace, but he remains one of the most dynamic midfielders in Europe, and his vision and energy could still change the shape of a side. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea’s veteran midfielder joins Barcelona in 2023.
